Debevoise & Plimpton LLP announced today that Aseel Rabie has joined the firm’s Washington, D.C. office as counsel in the Financial Institutions Group. In this role, Ms. Rabie will advise the firm’s clients on regulatory, supervisory and enforcement matters in the anti-money laundering and sanctions space.
Ms. Rabie brings to the firm a broad range of experience with respect to anti-money laundering, sanctions and other financial crimes matters. Prior to joining Debevoise, Ms. Rabie served as a managing director and associate general counsel at the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association (SIFMA), where she was the resident subject matter expert on anti-money laundering and economic sanctions and primary capital markets matters. In her role, she provided guidance to financial institutions, including securities broker-dealers and banks, on a broad range of anti-money laundering and sanctions matters. She also managed industry benchmarking discussions and advocacy efforts before the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Financial Industry Regulatory Authority, Financial Crimes Enforcement Network, Office of Foreign Assets Control and other policy makers.
“Aseel’s subject matter expertise aligns closely with the needs of the broad range of clients we serve and that have been facing increasing scrutiny in the anti-money laundering and sanctions space,” said Satish M. Kini, chair of the Banking Group at Debevoise. “Her deep background and experience in these areas will also be an important resource to the firm’s core practices, including our Banking, Corporate and White Collar Groups, where our clients regularly face financial crimes questions and issues in regulatory investigations, as well as transactions, fundraising, and lending.”
Prior to her role at SIFMA, Ms. Rabie served as senior counsel in the SEC’s Office of the General Counsel, where she advised on legal and policy matters relating to SEC rulemaking activities and enforcement actions. Earlier in her career, she served as the lead in-house counsel on corporate finance and securities law matters at a satellite communications company and worked on securities regulatory and enforcement, anti-corruption and other matters in private practice. Ms. Rabie received her B.A. in economics from Harvard College and a J.D. from Harvard Law School.
