At its eighth annual north America Award ceremony, Managing Intellectual Property recognized Debevoise & Plimpton LLP in the “Milestone Case of the Year: U.S. Supreme Court” category for the firm’s work in American Broadcasting Cos. v. Aereo. The awards dinner was held in Washington, D.C. on March 18. The awards recognize outstanding work by law firms, in-house teams and individuals in the United States and Canada.
Launched in 2012, Aereo intercepted broadcast television programs and rerouted them, over the Internet, to its own subscribers. ABC/Disney, CBS and NBC Universal, represented by Debevoise, and Fox and other broadcasters sued Aereo for infringing their copyrights. Last June, the Supreme Court, in a 6-3 decision, held that Aereo violated the broadcast networks’ public performance rights.
The Debevoise team was led by partners Bruce P. Keller, Jeffrey P. Cunard and Matthew E. Fishbein, and included counsel Michael Potenza and Jim Pastore, and associates Charles W. Baxter and Neelima Teerdhala.
