Debevoise & Plimpton LLP is pleased to announce that Gavin Anderson, Morgan J. Hayes, Rafael Kariyev, Sue Meng, Edwin Northover, Jane Shvets and Ramya S. Tiller will become partners of the firm, effective July 1, 2017.
Gavin Anderson, based in the Hong Kong office, is a member of the firm’s Global Investment Management/Funds Group. His practice focuses on advising sponsors and investors on a variety of investment management issues including fund formation, co-investments and other related activities. Mr. Anderson joined the firm in 2006. He graduated from the Legal Practice Course at the Oxford Institute of Legal Practice in 2002, earned his PgDL from the College of Law at Guildford in 2001, and also holds a First Class BA degree from Oxford University (Brasenose College). He is qualified in both England & Wales and Hong Kong.
Morgan J. Hayes, based in the New York office, is a member of the firm’s Corporate Department and the Capital Markets Group. His practice focuses on securities law, capital markets transactions and corporate governance matters. He is also co-managing editor of the firm’s Insider Trading and Disclosure Update. Mr. Hayes joined the firm in 2010. He received his J.D. from Fordham University School of Law in 2007, and is admitted to practice in California and New York.
Rafael Kariyev, based in the New York office, is a member of the firm’s Tax Department. He focuses his practice on tax planning in connection with private equity fund formation and M&A transactions. Mr. Kariyev regularly advises private equity funds on tax issues at all levels of the fund structure. In addition, he regularly advises on tax structuring acquisitions, holdings and dispositions of portfolio companies, both pass-throughs and corporations, as well as transactions involving the restructuring and sale of existing funds and sales of asset managers. Mr. Kariyev joined the firm in 2000. He received his J.D. from Columbia University in 1999, where he was a Kent Scholar and a member of the Journal of Environmental Law. He also earned his LL.M in Taxation from NYU in 2002.
Sue Meng, based in the New York office, is a member of the Corporate Department, as well as the Mergers & Acquisitions and Private Equity Groups. She focuses her practice on advising leading corporations, financial institutions and private equity firms on structuring and negotiating mergers, acquisitions, investments, divestitures and other corporate transactions. Ms. Meng joined Debevoise in 2010. She received a J.D. from Yale Law School in 2010, where she was a Coker Fellow, a recipient of a Paul and Daisy Soros Fellowship for New Americans and an editor of the Yale Journal of International Law. Ms. Meng received a M.St. with distinction in English Literature and a M.Phil with distinction in Modern Chinese Studies from Oxford University, which she attended as a Rhodes Scholar. She received an A.B. magna cum laude with highest honors from Harvard University. She is fluent in Mandarin Chinese.
Edwin Northover, based in the Hong Kong office, is a member of the Corporate Department and the firm’s Financial Institutions Group. He has a broad cross-border public and private mergers and acquisitions practice, with a particular focus on mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures and distribution agreements in the insurance industry. Since moving to the Hong Kong office in 2012, he has worked on several of the most significant insurance M&A transactions in Asia. He also has extensive private equity experience, having worked on a number of strategic and coinvestments. Mr. Northover joined Debevoise in 2007, and was based in the firm’s London office prior to his move to Asia. He graduated with a Double First Class Honours degree from Merton College, University of Oxford, and earned his L.P.C. from BPP Law School in 2003. He is qualified in both England & Wales and Hong Kong.
Jane Shvets, based in the London office, is a member of the Litigation Department and the firm’s White Collar & Regulatory Defense and Cybersecurity & Data Privacy Groups. Her practice focuses on white collar defense and internal investigations, in particular regarding compliance with corrupt practices legislation, as well as compliance assessments and data protection and cybersecurity matters. Ms. Shvets has also represented a variety of U.S. and foreign corporate clients in complex litigation and international arbitration matters, with a particular emphasis on Eastern Europe and Russia. Ms. Shvets is a native Russian speaker and frequently leads matters in Russian. She joined the firm in 2007. Ms. Shvets earned a J.D. with honors from Harvard Law School, where she served as Senior Editor of the Harvard Law Review.
Ramya S. Tiller, based in the New York office, is a member of the Corporate Department and the firm’s Finance Group. She focuses her practice on complex acquisition and leveraged finance transactions. Ms. Tiller joined the firm in 2007. Between 2010 and 2012, she worked for an international law firm in Munich, Germany. Ms. Tiller is fluent in German. She received an LL.M. (Corporate Law) from New York University School of Law in 2005, where she was a Hauser scholar and a B.A. LLB (Hons.) degree from the National Law School of India University in Bangalore, India in 2002.
